Frequently Asked Questions about Ladies Night Out

Ladies Night Out is a free disc golf league for females of all ages and skill levels in the Kansas City area. We provide a fun, relaxed and supportive atmosphere for anyone wanting to learn more and improve their disc golf game with other women.

We’ve tried to answer the most commonly asked questions below. Please feel free to post in the comments below any other questions or special concerns.

Every Monday night April – September.
April: Tee off at 5:30 pm;  May-September: Tee off at 6:00pm.
Please try to arrive 15 minutes before tee time.

Where

Rosedale Disc Golf Course. 4125 Mission Road, Kansas City, KS.
We’ll be using the Up Top course most weeks.

Do I need to bring or buy discs?

We have discs available each week for you to use if you don’t have discs yet. Eventually you will want to buy a few of your own. We’d be happy to help you with recommendations on disc choices and where to buy when you are ready.

I've only played a couple of times and I really like it but I'm not sure I'm ready for a league.

We’re beginner friendly and have ladies every week of all skill levels. Some just started playing and go to ladies night to learn more about the basics and core skills. Other ladies are more advanced and help mentor the beginner ladies.

My schedule varies and I'm not sure I would be able to make it every Monday night.

There’s no commitment. We know how challenging it is to balance all our responsibilities as women, wives and mothers. Show up and play whenever and as often as you can.

What do I wear?

Whatever makes you happy! The main thing is to be comfortable. We suggest athletic or hiking type shoes. Attire for disc golfers varies based on season but for women typically includes leggings, shorts, golf skirts, sport performance type shirts, hoodies, tee shirts, and tank tops. We also love our crazy socks!

I'm a more advanced player. Is this league only for beginners?

No way! We have several advanced and pro players too that come out and play just to have fun and camaraderie with the other women. You can come out and help mentor and support the beginners or choose to play for Diva Bag tags with other advanced players that want a little side competition.

KC Divas Bag Tags. Available for $6.00.

Can I bring my child?

Absolutely! They are our little future disc golfers! Many women bring their children out, strollers and all. If there are enough on a particular week, we try to put them all together on one card as a family group.

One of the KC Disc Golf Divas, Ava Meyer. She’s just 8 years old and already has a love and passion for disc golf! Future competition for sure!

Can I bring my dog?

Yes- We are pet friendly! Just be sure to bring poo bags and be respectful as you are in any other public park.

Meet Pico. She’s a regular with the KC Divas!

Can I bring my guy?

YES! We share the course every Monday night with the the KCFDC Recreational league. We’re excited to see the return of this league, which is also FREE. You’ll play with the ladies, and he’ll play with the guys!

Announcing Heartland Women’s Disc Golf Series

Announcing Heartland Women’s Disc Golf Series

I am pleased to announce a new women’s series right here in the Midwest: the Heartland Women’s Disc Golf Series!

I founded the Kansas City Disc Golf Diva’s league in 2011 and following that success we hosted the first annual KC Diva Spring Feeva event in 2015. In 2016, it was also a Women’s Global Event (WGE) and we filled our event with 89 players, the second largest Women’s Global Event overall.

I say this to point out the promising growth we’ve seen in women’s disc golf here in the Kansas City area.

It’s been on my heart to expand our reach and spread the love to more women, especially in the lower Midwest states. This past November while attending the Director’s Cup in Indiana, I had the pleasure of meeting PDGA Women’s Committee member, Erin Oakley. In chats with Erin, who is also the organizer of the Midwest Women’s Disc Golf Tour, I was inspired to take a leap of faith and move forward.

The Heartland Women’s Disc Golf Series was born! Teaming up with ladies from other states, our mission is to plant the seeds and provide support and resources to grow women’s disc golf leagues and events in the lower Midwest states: Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma.

The 2017 schedule is below. We hope to add more events soon. Please contact us if you are interested in hosting a women’s only event or even starting a women’s league in your area. We don’t have all the answers but we’d be happy to share tips and our experience with you.

Be sure to like Heartland Women’s Disc Golf Series on Facebook!

2016 Diva Feeva Wrap Up

On May 14th at Swope Park Disc Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo an extraordinary event occurred. 89 ladies from 8 different states, from ages 7 – 60, shared a disc golf experience like no other here in the Midwest. 81 of the 89 actually competed, and for many it was their very first tournament experience.

Video credit: Melissa Petrin

Thank you to Melissa Petrin for her hard work filming and doing interviews to help capture the event. She was also was responsible for getting us covered in the local media. Check out the video that aired on Time Warner MetroSports Channel.

This has been a dream come true for myself and my assistant director, Amy Crowe. Just seeing that many women competing and having a great time together brought a few tears throughout the day. Our mission with the Kansas City Disc Golf Divas has always been to grow the sport for women. We started doing this locally with our leagues and other activities. Now with this event, we have a greater reach and can share the sport with women in the entire Midwest. More women playing disc golf and more friendships made that we hope are for a lifetime.

This year we were also a part of the 3rd biennial PDGA Women’s Global Event (WGE) and over 1600 other women across 11 countries and 28 states also competed simultaneously in events like ours! Collectively, this created the largest PDGA sanctioned event for a single demographic ever. With WGE events held in the United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Estonia, Iceland, United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan, the WGE reached more new countries and countless new players from around the world.

Thanks and big hugs to Valarie Jenkins, Sara Nicholson and the entire WGE planning team for their hard work and dedication to making this such an amazing event. Read more about this  international success story here!

2016 Summer League Schedule

2016 Summer League Schedule

banner-ladiesnight

The weather is getting warmer and windier here in Kansas City which is a sure sign that the Spring and Summer disc golf season is here!

2016 marks our 6th consecutive year and we will continue our traditional Monday nights at Rosedale a.k.a. Ladies Night Out!

We’re also trying something new this year. It’s like a traveling league… with a twist. I want to get a better understanding of where the ladies play in the KC area so we will be coming to a course near you very soon! I also hope this will give better opportunities for more women to participate.

So every Monday night we will be at Rosedale- this league is FREE and VERY beginner friendly. We will offer clinics once a month that will also be free. More advanced players are highly encouraged to come out and be a mentor!

New for 2016:  Then one night during the week we will offer a 2nd league on a rotating schedule of courses.  We will be supporting other KCFDC leagues  throughout the year with hopefully 1 or 2 women’s cards. You know- we gotta spread the KC Diva’s love!

Diva Feeva Supports Right to Play

Diva Feeva Supports Right to Play

For the 2016 PDGA Women’s Global Event, the PDGA will be supporting Right To Play, a global organization that uses the transformative power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity. Through playing sports and games, Right To Play helps over one million children learn to create better futures, while driving lasting social change in 18 countries each week. Founded in 2000 by social entrepreneur and four-time Olympic gold medalist Johann Olav Koss, the organization’s mission is to use sport and play to educate and empower children and youth to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict and disease in disadvantaged communities.

29th Annual Kansas City Ice Bowl

29th Annual Kansas City Ice Bowl

icebowl-2015

The Kansas City Ice Bowl, hosted by the KCFDC is held every year in January and this marks the 29th year.  It has grown to become the largest locally attended disc golf event of the year and you don’t want to miss out. Its purposes are raising funds to fight hunger, having fun, and connecting our Disc Golf community in a positive way to the community at large. Kansas City disc golf community has raised over $67,000 in support of the hungry.  Our supported charities are the Bishop Sullivan Center’s St James Food Pantry and Harvesters: the Community Food Network.

Last years Kansas City Ice Bowl raised a total of $8,000 that was divided between the two local food charities.  The KC Ice Bowl tied for 6th for the most money raised out of 208 events. The final player/donator counts was 401 people, 325 of which played at least one round. We are attempting to raise $10,000 this year – come out to support and have a great time!

History of the Ice Bowl

The Ice Bowl is a collection of disc golf events that are held each year in January and February with an overall mission of raising funds to fight hunger. Related goals include having fun and connecting the disc golf community in a positive way to the community at large.”

– taken from the official Ice Bowl HQ website,  maintained by the Ice Bowl instigator, Rick Rothstein .

The first Ice Bowl was the product of a good idea, born out of yearning for the winter of 1987 to be over and for the disc golf season to begin again. While the course in Albert-Oakland Park was always there in Columbia, Missouri, and it was certainly possible to get a buddy or three to go out for a round, it was always more fun to get as many people as possible together for a couple of rounds. Rick Rothstein dreamed up the event and decided that the Sunday before the Super Bowl would be the perfect time, since no one would have to miss any football playoff games on  TV,  and  maybe  he  could  entice  some  local  media  to  check  out  the  disc  golfers playing  in  the  winter  weather.  Little  did  anyone  know  that  the  Ice  Bowl  would  become  a  traditional,
annual  event  that  would  eventually  raise  over  $3 million  in  charitable  contributions,  specifically targeted to fight hunger and feed the hungry.

Check out the full Ice Bowl History PDF that includes many more details such as the snowiest events, the coldest events, the events that raised the most money.
