News for the 2018 disc golf season

News for the 2018 disc golf season

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, DISC GOLF DIVAS!
This is an especially busy time for all of us with the holidays just around the corner so I wanted to get a few things on your calendars. I also have some exciting news and plans for the 2018 season I want to share. Let’s use the time at our monthly brunches over the winter to discuss more.

2018 KANSAS CITY ICE BOWL CHALLENGE
The KC Disc Golf Divas will be challenging other disc golf groups or organizations to a fundraising contest. I’m talking Beer League, Dirty Birds, Launchpad, etc… we will be calling them out. The common goal: to help the Kansas City Ice Bowl reach its ambitious goal of raising $10,000 for Bishop Sullivan Center. There are some incentives for raising specific amounts of money. However, bragging rights for being the group that raises the most money will be an even greater reward. There is even a special traveling trophy in the works that will be a part of KC Ice Bowl for future years! Win or lose, it’s a great time for an even better cause! Pledge sheets available to download and print here.

SAVE THE DATE: 2018 KC Diva Spring Feeva + PDGA Women’s Global Event
The 4th Annual KC Diva Spring Feeva is planned for Saturday May 12th 2018. We will also be a participating PDGA Women’s Global Event.

Are you interested in joining the 2018 Diva Feeva Planning Team? Please get in touch with Rhonda or Amy Crowe asap. We will be holding an open planning meeting in January where we hope to learn more about everyone’s unique skills and strengths to best benefit the team & event.

COMPETITIVE LEAGUE PLAY & BAG TAGS
Kaylee Kincaid will be running a competitive level league for us this winter. This will be in addition to our normal league. It’s a great opportunity to get some pro tips and prepare yourself for the 2018 disc golf tournament season. During these more competitive rounds, I would also love to see a return of our Disc Golf Divas bag tags. Dates to be added to schedule soon.

THE DISC GOLF DIVAS COMPETITION SCHOLARSHIP
We are in the process of developing a scholarship program that will help local women disc golfers that have a desire to compete in PDGA sanctioned events but do not yet have a commercial sponsor. More details and qualification outline to be announced on our website soon.

Divas Fall & Winter Schedule

Divas Fall & Winter Schedule

Less daylight and cooler weather means the Disc Golf Divas are on the move again. Monday September 25th 2017 is our last Ladies Night Out for the season at Rosedale. We’ll be back at Swope on Sundays for our winter league beginning October 8th.

Something new this year is the addition of Disc Golf Diva’s Brunch. One Sunday a month we will meet for brunch before our round at a designated home of a Diva brunch hostess.

photo from Etsy

Ideally, we will play at each host’s home course after brunch but it will be up to her on the course and format we play that week. If the weather is not good for playing disc golf, maybe some board games!  I would like to try to limit how much responsibility each hostess has in terms of food and drink so let’s all plan to bring something or make a donation to help offset that.

My hope for these monthly gatherings in each others homes is that it brings us all that much closer, but also opens up new opportunities to get more ladies involved. In fact, I’ll be giving prizes for bringing someone new.

I’ll be personally hosting our first Divas Brunch at my house in Old Hyde Park/Midtown area beginning at 10:30 am on October 8th. Followed by 1 round at Swope (approx. 1:00 pm start time.)

Below is the schedule for Sundays for October 2017 through February 2018. I’ll keep this updated as we go along and if things change. Thank you to all the ladies that volunteered as a Brunch Hostess. This should be fun!

Thank you again to all our SPONSORS and VOLUNTEERS for making this event possible!  We are proud and honored to host this event in Kansas City and partner with the best disc golf club in the country, the Kansas City Flying Disc Club.  The Kansas City disc golf community has been behind this event from it’s inception and many look forward to it all year. From monetary and product donations to resources, supplies and an overwhelming number of volunteers and spectators, you are the wind beneath our wings!

Perfect spring weather, beautiful and talented ladies, supportive gentlemen AND DISC GOLF! We had quite a bit of rain here in Kansas City leading up to this event but we could not have asked for better weather the entire weekend. We kicked off on Friday and celebrated with a doubles event followed by a fun happy hour theme.  It was hugs and high fives throughout the day as players, caddies and volunteers arrived. The great weather brought out a record 58 teams to play in the Spring Feeva Dubs.  Happy hour with a complimentary taco bar and beer was a hit. Music and more gathering, chatting and fun times through the evening.

Saturday morning it was go time and the atmosphere and energy continued.  Here are a few highlights.

Jennifer Allen competed in Diva Feeva for the first time this year and with an amazing score of 48 in round 1, helped her ultimately take home the win. We had an extremely talented field of 13 Open women including our 2016 champion, Paige Bjerkaas.

For our Junior divisions this year, we tried something new. With feedback from one of our local juniors, we designed a junior course within the main course layout using temporary tee pads.  It was a shorter version but still had some challenging shots. These girls are so adorable together and inspiring to watch. Keep your eye on these young ladies in the future!

As is our tradition and how we roll here at KC Diva Feeva, the ladies were greeted with Roses and Mimosas as they came in from round 2 and cards were turned in.

Naturally there were a few ‘technical difficulties”. For example, the CTP flag did not make it out during round 2 for the AM divisions. Leave it to a group of women to find a solution and not make that a big issue – they used a banana instead. Debbie Polkinghorne was our first Banana prize winner!

The after effect ripples that this event creates is still happening! The ladies leave super-charged and on fire to get back home and get ladies together to play. We’ve seen posts from other women’s disc golf groups and leagues already making plans – love it! Shout out to all the ladies that returned to KC Diva Feeva this year and brought their friends! That’s what keeps this event growing.

Remember, the 2018 KC Diva Spring Feeva will also be a participating PDGA Women’s Global Event (WGE) and we hope to accommodate up to 144 women competitors!

We appreciate all the kind and encouraging words we’ve received. We welcome all feedback so please feel free to share your comments below.

Hope to see you all here in Kansas City in May 2018.

Ben and Rhonda Crosby
Tournament Directors

It takes many great sponsors to make this event possible. Please be sure to thank them for their support! See our sponsors here

We still have host homes available for a couple of ladies. We do not have a host hotel, however there are several hotel options within a short drive of the course. If you are a PDGA member, take advantage of your hotel discount benefits.  Reply to this email if you need help arranging lodging for your stay.

If you are on Facebook, we’ll also be posting updates on the Facebook event here.

Excited to see you all soon!

Frequently Asked Questions about Ladies Night Out

Frequently Asked Questions about Ladies Night Out

Ladies Night Out is a free disc golf league for females of all ages and skill levels in the Kansas City area. We provide a fun, relaxed and supportive atmosphere for anyone wanting to learn more and improve their disc golf game with other women.

We’ve tried to answer the most commonly asked questions below. Please feel free to post in the comments below any other questions or special concerns.

When

Every Monday night April – September.
April: Tee off at 5:30 pm;  May-September: Tee off at 6:00pm.
Please try to arrive 15 minutes before tee time.

Where

Rosedale Disc Golf Course. 4125 Mission Road, Kansas City, KS.
We’ll be using the Up Top course most weeks.

Cost and Registration

It’s FREE every week and pre-registration is not required. Just show up a few minutes before our tee off time.

Format

We play a basic singles format most weeks but mix it up with random draw doubles or another format occasionally. Once a month we will play the Down Under course, also located at Rosedale, to work on our short game and shaping shots. Prizes and fun side games each week.

Look for updates on additional clinics and special guests throughout the season.

2016 League with special guest Valarie Doss

Do I need to bring or buy discs?

We have discs available each week for you to use if you don’t have discs yet. Eventually you will want to buy a few of your own. We’d be happy to help you with recommendations on disc choices and where to buy when you are ready.

I've only played a couple of times and I really like it but I'm not sure I'm ready for a league.

We’re beginner friendly and have ladies every week of all skill levels. Some just started playing and go to ladies night to learn more about the basics and core skills. Other ladies are more advanced and help mentor the beginner ladies.

My schedule varies and I'm not sure I would be able to make it every Monday night.

There’s no commitment. We know how challenging it is to balance all our responsibilities as women, wives and mothers. Show up and play whenever and as often as you can.

What do I wear?

Whatever makes you happy! The main thing is to be comfortable. We suggest athletic or hiking type shoes. Attire for disc golfers varies based on season but for women typically includes leggings, shorts, golf skirts, sport performance type shirts, hoodies, tee shirts, and tank tops. We also love our crazy socks!

I'm a more advanced player. Is this league only for beginners?

No way! We have several advanced and pro players too that come out and play just to have fun and camaraderie with the other women. You can come out and help mentor and support the beginners or choose to play for Diva Bag tags with other advanced players that want a little side competition.

KC Divas Bag Tags. Available for $6.00.

Can I bring my child?

Absolutely! They are our little future disc golfers! Many women bring their children out, strollers and all. If there are enough on a particular week, we try to put them all together on one card as a family group.

One of the KC Disc Golf Divas, Ava Meyer. She’s just 8 years old and already has a love and passion for disc golf! Future competition for sure!

Can I bring my dog?

Yes- We are pet friendly! Just be sure to bring poo bags and be respectful as you are in any other public park.

Meet Pico. She’s a regular with the KC Divas!

Can I bring my guy?

YES! We share the course every Monday night with the the KCFDC Recreational league. We’re excited to see the return of this league, which is also FREE. You’ll play with the ladies, and he’ll play with the guys!

Our Partners and Sponsors

We are a sister club of the Kansas City Flying Disc Club. We encourage you to explore their website and learn more about the KCFDC. Want to get more involved in the Kansas City disc golf scene? Become a member!

Dynamic Discs Kansas City is a sponsor of Ladies Night Out and many other KC Disc Golf Divas events. They help provide many of the weekly prizes and help with coordinating clinics.

2016 Diva Feeva Wrap Up

On May 14th at Swope Park Disc Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo an extraordinary event occurred. 89 ladies from 8 different states, from ages 7 – 60, shared a disc golf experience like no other here in the Midwest. 81 of the 89 actually competed, and for many it was their very first tournament experience.

Video credit: Melissa Petrin

Thank you to Melissa Petrin for her hard work filming and doing interviews to help capture the event. She was also was responsible for getting us covered in the local media. Check out the video that aired on Time Warner MetroSports Channel.

This has been a dream come true for myself and my assistant director, Amy Crowe. Just seeing that many women competing and having a great time together brought a few tears throughout the day. Our mission with the Kansas City Disc Golf Divas has always been to grow the sport for women. We started doing this locally with our leagues and other activities. Now with this event, we have a greater reach and can share the sport with women in the entire Midwest. More women playing disc golf and more friendships made that we hope are for a lifetime.

This year we were also a part of the 3rd biennial PDGA Women’s Global Event (WGE) and over 1600 other women across 11 countries and 28 states also competed simultaneously in events like ours! Collectively, this created the largest PDGA sanctioned event for a single demographic ever. With WGE events held in the United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Estonia, Iceland, United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan, the WGE reached more new countries and countless new players from around the world.

Thanks and big hugs to Valarie Jenkins, Sara Nicholson and the entire WGE planning team for their hard work and dedication to making this such an amazing event. Read more about this  international success story here!

The course was BEAUTIFUL thanks to Patrick Smith, Gary Birge and everyone else that played a part in setting up the Diva Feeva layout.

Special thanks and gratitude goes to Amy Crowe!  She has put in countless hours of work helping organize the event. She is a tremendous asset to our team and a great friend. I could not have done this with out her.

Last but not least I thank my husband, Ben Crosby, who has supported me all these years with my mission to promote women’s disc golf. I can’t imagine having another Tournament Director for this event.

2016 Summer League Schedule

2016 Summer League Schedule

banner-ladiesnight

The weather is getting warmer and windier here in Kansas City which is a sure sign that the Spring and Summer disc golf season is here!

2016 marks our 6th consecutive year and we will continue our traditional Monday nights at Rosedale a.k.a. Ladies Night Out!

We’re also trying something new this year. It’s like a traveling league… with a twist. I want to get a better understanding of where the ladies play in the KC area so we will be coming to a course near you very soon! I also hope this will give better opportunities for more women to participate.

So every Monday night we will be at Rosedale- this league is FREE and VERY beginner friendly. We will offer clinics once a month that will also be free. More advanced players are highly encouraged to come out and be a mentor!

New for 2016:  Then one night during the week we will offer a 2nd league on a rotating schedule of courses.  We will be supporting other KCFDC leagues  throughout the year with hopefully 1 or 2 women’s cards. You know- we gotta spread the KC Diva’s love!

29th Annual Kansas City Ice Bowl

29th Annual Kansas City Ice Bowl

icebowl-2015

The Kansas City Ice Bowl, hosted by the KCFDC is held every year in January and this marks the 29th year.  It has grown to become the largest locally attended disc golf event of the year and you don’t want to miss out. Its purposes are raising funds to fight hunger, having fun, and connecting our Disc Golf community in a positive way to the community at large. Kansas City disc golf community has raised over $67,000 in support of the hungry.  Our supported charities are the Bishop Sullivan Center’s St James Food Pantry and Harvesters: the Community Food Network.

Last years Kansas City Ice Bowl raised a total of $8,000 that was divided between the two local food charities.  The KC Ice Bowl tied for 6th for the most money raised out of 208 events. The final player/donator counts was 401 people, 325 of which played at least one round. We are attempting to raise $10,000 this year – come out to support and have a great time!

History of the Ice Bowl

The Ice Bowl is a collection of disc golf events that are held each year in January and February with an overall mission of raising funds to fight hunger. Related goals include having fun and connecting the disc golf community in a positive way to the community at large.”

– taken from the official Ice Bowl HQ website,  maintained by the Ice Bowl instigator, Rick Rothstein .

The first Ice Bowl was the product of a good idea, born out of yearning for the winter of 1987 to be over and for the disc golf season to begin again. While the course in Albert-Oakland Park was always there in Columbia, Missouri, and it was certainly possible to get a buddy or three to go out for a round, it was always more fun to get as many people as possible together for a couple of rounds. Rick Rothstein dreamed up the event and decided that the Sunday before the Super Bowl would be the perfect time, since no one would have to miss any football playoff games on  TV,  and  maybe  he  could  entice  some  local  media  to  check  out  the  disc  golfers playing  in  the  winter  weather.  Little  did  anyone  know  that  the  Ice  Bowl  would  become  a  traditional,
annual  event  that  would  eventually  raise  over  $3 million  in  charitable  contributions,  specifically targeted to fight hunger and feed the hungry.

Check out the full Ice Bowl History PDF that includes many more details such as the snowiest events, the coldest events, the events that raised the most money.

Swope Love Projects

Swope Love Projects

DivasLoveSwopeSwope Park Disc Golf course is my favorite in the city and what I call my home course. It’s beautiful year round but especially beautiful in the spring and fall. You put this amazing piece of property with such rich history in the hands of Patrick Smith and Gary Birge (and other workhorse volunteers over the years) and you get to be privileged to play on a course like we have today.

The Kansas City Disc Golf Divas have made Swope our home for our weekly fall league and our annual women’s only event, KC Diva Feeva. It’s important for us to give back and we have 2 upcoming projects that I invite you all to participate in. Instead of course work days, I prefer to call them Swope Love Projects 🙂

Sunday November 1st- 10 am:

[UPDATED: World Series Delay! Change of plans for our workday this Sunday, we’re a little behind schedule on getting the bush pulled out which is step one. We will still have league on Sunday but we won’t be working on our project yet. I’ll let everyone know the new date soon. It may not be on a Sunday if that’s cool with everyone.]

We’ll be starting a beautification project in front of the clubhouse and planting a flower garden. Can you imagine how beautiful it will be this spring for Diva Feeva?! Do you have a garden at home that needs some thinning out- this is the perfect time. Bring anything from your own gardens you want to share. We’ll also be planting bulbs. Bring your gardening tools if you have them too.

Sunday December 6th – 11 am:

We’ll be decorating the pine tree near #3’s basket for Christmas. Please bring out any extra decorations and ornaments you don’t need or maybe were thinking of donating/throwing away.

Both of these project will happen at Swope before league at 1pm. Any questions, let me know in comments below.

Thanks in advance for your help and support!
